Work Experience
Tutoring
I spent 6 years as an ELA teacher in a public middle school and have been tutoring on and off for 30 years. I help students with writing skills, but also with finding joy in the writing process! I focus on helping them find out what works best for them individually. I have worked with students with many learning differences, students who love to write, and students who are reluctant writers.
There is not much I enjoy more than helping someone find out that they are able to write, express their ideas, and be understood.
Coaching
I have coached students and families who struggle with ADHD/executive functioning deficits to find systems and strategies that make school, homework, and learning much easier and much less stressful! I have helped parents understand and prepare for IEP/504 meetings and to be clear and efficient in their communications with teachers and administrators.
Editing/First Reads
I have worked with both fiction and non-fiction writers providing support by doing a thorough first read of their books/stories/papers. I provided each with detailed comments on structure, character building, and storytelling. I am sometimes asked to read for specific concerns and details.

"Julie’s editorial input has given my writing an enormous boost. She has a laser eye for the smallest glitches in style and tone, and a terrific capacity to imagine things from a potential reader’s perspective. Since I’ve been showing her my short stories, my publication rate has spiked! And I’m overall just much, much happier with my final drafts."
